It feels like this will never go away!

Welcome to the Copper Country, folks!

Today, June 8, 2009, is cold…not as cold as this photo shows, but it feels like we’ll never see summer this year. We had one day of warm weather, then back to the rainy, wet, chilly days that you normally see in very early spring.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining (not really, anyway)! This photo was taken right after the Ground Hog Day storm of ’09. The U(pper) P(eninsula) of Michigan is a rugged place to live in terms of the harsh & unpredictable weather patterns and extremely small towns spread far apart on the map (lots of driving through state forests to get to the next town). Those of us who live here – us Yoopers – usually take pride in our ability to thrive in this climate while living this far away from urban America (think “Northern Exposure” on loads of caffeine).

But, seriously, what’s up with the weather this year? We may have a cooler climate, but honestly, our summers are usually gorgeous and make the lengthy winter months worth the shivering and hibernation we usually undertake.

Global warming? Possibly. The “Natural Cycle” of the weather patterns? Maybe.

My bet is global warming, given the wonky weather we’ve been seeing for the last several years. We northerners tend to joke about global warming. “Global warming,” we shout, gleefully. “We could use some tropical weather in the Copper Country!”

Maybe we’d better double-check what that means before we begin our Happy Dance.
